Happy New Year everyone!

These past two weeks I've been off from work, and it's been fantastic. I've been doing most of my shooting with my Nikon F2, which was like the second 35mm SLR camera Nikon ever came out with. Shooting with film is great because you got to be a bit more disciplined with your shots-- you can't just fill up a 4GB card and press delete on the go. You gotta take your time to really compose an image, and I think it's made for really good practice as a photographer. Anyway, here's a couple of shots stretching from Brooklyn, NY all the way to Long Beach, CA. Shot with Fujifilm Superia 400 film and untouched except for some dust & scratch removal because of my dirty scanner.

Ever since we started, I always envisioned a Tikko 'Best Of.' We go through thousands upon thousands of images per year, we tend to lose track of things, especially our best work. I always forget about certain projects in the archive, as things are always shifting and as Tikko fine tunes its specialties. Not to mention, close to failing external hard drives (knock on wood) of raw NEF's, you can imagine the high volume of material we store everyday.

Our lives for the past few years has been a roller coaster to say the least, this year was definitely no different. Here are the best images and moments of 2008. Enjoy, and thanks again for checking in with us.

Filling a bigger frame

This holiday season Tikko has decided to welcome a horrible beast to the family!!!!

Introducing: Canon 5d Mark ii AKA "The Beast"

Weights about the same as my older and smaller camera, but it shoots at an incredible 21 megapixels and can even record video at super high definition, making it a dream come true for a video lover like me.

It also has a full frame sensor that adds more juice in each photo. However, in this photo of my grandparents I decided, for some strange reason, that the wall was more important.

Another delightful thing about it is its 'live view' mode which allows you to see out of the lens on its 3 inch LCD, its really helpful when shooting at awkward angles, or when you want to talk to your subject while shooting

That's the 85mm lens from about 5 feet away, looks like a 50mm on a cropped sensor camera.

I have yet to edit any videos to post them up, but I promise to do that soon!

Here is one more shot by the beast taken for the boys from Kallusive, who came by for a family portrait session (more to follow...)

I am going to try to squeeze out the max from 2008 and finish editing some things to post in the coming days. Hope you are as happy with Santa as I am this year :)

Sunday morning we went up to the local mountains to finish up the last of the engagement session. Ryan, an avid skier and mountain biker knew of an area just off the highway with a sweet view of the river and forest. We packed the Subaru and took the morning to explore the beautiful mountain ridge. It ended up snowing up near Stevens Pass so the timing couldn't have been better.

Had the great privilege to come see our wedding clients Kieu and Ryan Barr this weekend here in Seattle. They couldn't come down to So Cal to shoot engagement pics, so here we are! First real trip to the Northwest, other times being a roadtrip my family and I took in the summer of 91', pre- teen years. Of course now, with a greater appreciation to travel outside of California, yet alone travel anywhere, I am so very thankful.

When we were on the verge of evacuating our house a few weeks back, I remembered the first thing I took were my basketball cards. I wasn't the biggest collector but my cards included some of the greatest players of all time. According to the Beckett, they are surprisingly not worth too much haha. You would think my slew of Shaq rookie cards would be worth some good money, but I guess not.

I had some Barkley cards, Chris Mullen (my hero), even Bird but the most prized possession of course were of Magic and Jordan. 92-93' Fleer Ultra and UpperDeck..I remember growing up, those were the cleanest looking cards out there.

I even had the Magic vs. Jordan card haha, collectors item indefinitely.

Hey gang! My name's Chris Guy, and I'm a writer and photographer living out here in Brooklyn, New York. I did some shooting with Tikko Studios last year in SoCal, and moved out here to New York at the end of August. New York has been nothing but absolutely rad for the past couple of months, and although the weather dips down to the teens and the sun hardly ever shows its face, there's nowhere else I'd rather be. I can't recommend this city enough for anyone in their mid-20's with any sort of creative aspirations whatsoever.

Anyway, last month Louis came out to NYC for some R&R and photo fun. He asked if I'd like to post on the Tikko Blog from time to time for some FRESH perspective, and we had a couple drinks, one thing lead to another... and here we are! But first, mad props to Louis and Tigran for letting me post here with them-- they're amazing photographers and even more amazing dudes, and I'm honored to be posting some shots on the same page as them.

So last month here in NYC was really rainy and wet-- nothing but gloom and doom from sunrise to sunset. For whatever reason two Sundays ago, the sun decided to pop out for a little 4 hour window. I crawled out of bed, grabbed my gear, and headed over to Central Park to try and grab some shots while I could. It's pretty weird, because there's this thing called "the seasons" here, which is a trip coming from SoCal where it's perpetually summer and the coldest it ever gets is in the low 60s.

I guess what I'm trying to say is even though it's colder than a mother here on the east coast, autumn is absolutely gorgeous. The trees, colors, and overall feel of Central Park is just insanely beautiful, so here are a few quick shots that don't do the actual thing any justice whatsoever...

..or at least that's what I thought this car was when I passed it going 85mph on the freeway on my way home last night. It was a creeping silhouette leaning over the divider, then I noticed the tires and the break lights from the side and came to the realization that someone had just dropped the car from the sky.

Anyway, I went off the freeway and thanks to my techy iPhone I found the route to the nearest bridge there. By the time I got on top of the freeway, there was firetrucks and police helping the driver, a tv crewman showed up 5 minutes later.

Crazy morning. Probably the biggest scare this neighborhood has ever felt. Fire was literally 3 blocks down the street, no ones house was damaged, everything was under control by day light. We definitely lucked out. My heart goes out to those who lost their homes in this weekends terrible events.

My dad and I took a lil trip around our neighborhood and snapped some shots of the contained fire. Glad to know people really do come together in times of crisis.

Got a call from Tbiz at 3:30am and woke up to barking dogs and people on the streets. I went outside, looked at the hill across the way and the fires had hopped over to our street. Woke up my parents and packed the cars. Intense wake up call.

Went to the Gam Center last week for one of the premiere Art and Design Craft shows in LA. My good friend Kutchy was showcasing there and this girl I tell ya, just ridiculously creative, innovative and fresh with it. Her designs just so sharp and unique, as refreshing to the pupils as Blake Lively. Crazy comparison I know. I was blown away from the day one, literally just one of those, 'are you serious?!' kinda reactions.

Highlights Attract

Not long ago I read an article by a very polished photographer from Denmark, Thornsten Overgaard, who noted that a peculiar detail that makes paintings so unreal and attractive is the exaggerated brightness in the highlights.
This idea works well when applied to contrasty photos, and most photographers apply the technique whether they know it or not. When adding a curve's or levels adjustment we make the light spots brighter, and the dark spots darker. The same can also be done selectively using the dodge tool to brighten highlights, and burn tool to darken shadows.

For example, take this editorial photo from Jedroot.com (My favorite website for inspiration!)

There's black, there's white, and some popping color in between. And that's no accident. Not all photos need to be this way, but when the subject in the photo needs to stand out, this technique helps to draw attention to it by eliminating unnecesary details in the extreme light and dark areas.

So going back to Thornsten's point, I had some fun time creating a few designs consisting of only the highlights from a photo. The final image gives an idea of what the object is without showing anything but the brightest spots. Check out the examples, and the explanation of how to achieve the effect below:

ENQ is an idea for a friend making a production company, more to come about that in the coming weeks!

So for the actual process to achieve this effect, it only takes a few simple steps in photoshop.

First choose a photo that has distinct highlights, such as a portrait shot against the sun, where there is a fine bright line around the contours. Then follow the steps in this tutorial to get your cool silhouette.

If you can't find any thin highlights its ok, you can also use the technique on bigger highlight areas, you will just need to clean up more junk in the surroundings when you're done. Also, adding some color to the final image can help achieve your desired look. Here is a quick one I did for a friend:

November clouds are always welcome, they bring a sense of greatness to an average day.
Today reminded me of my trip to Armenia in 07. With new techniques in the back of my head, I started messing with an old photo from that trip on an endless quest to appeal the eye. Here are both versions:

The irony came, when I showed the photo to my mother and she told me the original was way better. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Let me know what you think, and if you want to know how to achieve this effect (5+ layers using photoshop).

Big Night

With a historic event happening in front of our eyes, this morning gave me a new charge of energy. Not solely because I voted for Obama but because the American dream like many have believed and said before, is real. The opportunities are endless and we as the people must dig deep and persevere in order to earn them. First black President in our nations history, a step to change and a revival of our senses. The vision is alive and well.

I spent the momentous election night with our friends over at Orisue to build on this dream. Mike and Allen are doing it big. Real big. And Tikko x Orisue, even bigger.

Hailing from Long Beach, this friendly group of four made you wonder what type of music they actually played. Had a great time in NY the past few days, but I'm back and had a 7am shoot this morning! Met with Mike for the Orisue Summer 09' Collection. It was the earliest I've ever shot, but with some coffee and sugar rounds, the morning went by quick.

Was in Irvine last week for some meetings and dropped by to visit my good friend Ash. He's opening a restaurant in Costa Mesa called California Shabu Shabu. When he first told me I was like, restaurant?wtf?! Ash is already doing it huge, as owner and manager of a large housing complex in Westwood, he's always diversifying his investments and just making it happen. But damn, the food industry is just a whole other level of baller haha.

Anyways I cruised by his house in Irvine to talk about some upcoming projects and to grab dinner.

In light of the bday today, I took the morning off and did a lil fishing. Started at Lake Mission Viejo and made our way to a private reservoir in Orange. Pretty decent day, but the heat was intense and we had to pack up earlier than expected. Wheres the fall weather at?!

While I was fishing, my phone was blowing up with messages, and I realized how facebook really does connect people. Had the oldest of friends hit me up today..people I haven't talked to in years hah. This past weekend I had a chance to work with CJ Edwards once more on another project. This time, for his company ExpreSSive DoUbt. Made up of industry professionals, this diverse group of dancers have definitely created a buzz within the community. Venturing in North Park

Last week I met up with Nora to do some night photography. A lot of high ISO involved, and some scary spots, check out the fun pics.

I had to slowly crawl up that porch because it looked like someone with a shotgun might live there. But I wonder if he would have been more scared of me looking possessed like that.

When I saw this man's chain I had to stop him for a photo. His only request was that I don't take the photo with his face in it. It looks nice with sepia.

Then we found a nice fluorescent light by a mini market, and I got to test the shadows.

There was also a big neon sign that had like 3 different colors, tried that one out as well:

By the time we got there, this tall man approached us to chat and he got a photo too.

This is that same house that I was posing in front of.

There was also a billboard sign next to the house, and since I like climbing things, the inevitable happened:

This house further down had an old-school Ford truck, so we sneaked in for this shot:

I like how there is just enough light to bring out the colors.

The whole trip was a bit eerie, and we walked for a good mile into unknown areas, but the photos were worth it. On the way back we got to see how the sidewalks are painted red for fire zones, there are these rolling spray paint machines that they drag along, no hand labor necessary. We couldn't resist playing with the paint.

Went to Downtown LA to scout some locations for a shoot we have on Saturday. It was nice to be in the city on a weekday, a small break of editing can always do a body good. As 5pm rolled around, you can feel the rush of movement in the one way streets and freeways. I just thought to myself living here is one thing but working there must be entire different monster.

But definitely good vibes as we walked around, people going about their own business and hustling on a hazy Tuesday afternoon.

Met with Phantom last night to discuss some upcoming marketing campaigns for Tikko. If you don't know of this man, you must've been sleeping under a rock or something hah. Celebrating his 10th yr of design, he's worked with major clients in the automotive and commercial industries including HIN, Jonari Corporation, The Attic, Boogiezone Inc, NOOE, Wildboyz of SD, and Proof Positive LA to name a few.

Known for his speciality marketing and branding, Thomas has become the premiere designer for our generation of established companies and upcoming organizations. He has definitely been busy with his own personal projects so it was great to spend some time and brainstorm a bit.

I met Jeffrey Tang about 5 years ago. Some people I knew were rocking these tees,with some pretty bold graphics and elaborate colors. It was catching on and I was interested to see what this whole hoopla was about..turns out the man behind the brand was none other than Jeff himself. Always the artist, JTang from the beginning had a very subtle clean style to his designs, a crisp sense of imagery and a tasteful, classy look. You could always count on something solid to come about through the drawing board. And not to mention he is definitely one the coolest people you'll ever meet, so I knew our collabo was gona be chillin like a villain.

Tikko Studios was honored to collabo with RFV for the second time and to have all the homies come support was definitely a huge treat.

Had a nice dinner meeting with a really dope photographer the other day. I actually met and heard of Erich Chen through friends and different events. Within the small community of photographers that I know and admire, this guy is probably one of the most legit. His work is sickk and not to mention he's definitely one of the most down to earth guys I've met, no exaggeration! Anyways, we had some Dennys and talked photography, great times for sure! Definitely looking forward to some project collaborations down the line.

Had a small break today from mass editing and took my cousin Nicola fishing. I've been reeling and dealin since 96' and in all the lakes I've come across, Puddingstone is by far the most challenging. You can usually manage to land a few, but more times than not, you go home empty handed. Either way, its always nice to pay a visit to Frank G. Boneli (park that is) and appreciate the home in which my fishing career began.

I've been a Dave Matthews Band fan for the past 12 years. This Tuesday, the band lost one of its original members, Leroi Moore. Probably one of most well respected Jazz musicians in our time. I dont know any dmb song without a ridiculous solo by Leroi. He was the backbone to the harmonious tunes we all come to love and admire. His death was definitely shocking news-not once did it cross my mind that DMB would someday lose a member so abruptly.

My deepest condolences goes out to Leroi's family and DMB. It definitely will never be the same, but the music will live on-and thats for certain.

I had a great shoot last week with the boys from Picmember, we invited Nina and Tom for a concept photo that will be used to market picmember's new campaign. Here are some photos from the session.

Having too much fun with each other..

That day was a long one for sure, we started off early to get some extra beach shots at Palos Verdes, but the only way down to the spot we found was following a suicidal vertical dirt path, which we managed to walk/slide down with tons of weight. The pictures that followed were totally worth it though. I finally fulfilled my goal of getting both model and my camera in wet, using an underwater case for the canon :O

And last, but not least, I finally developed some b/w film from my Lubitel camera that traveled to SF with us, here is one photo I really liked.. I took it from up close pretending to look into a dark metal box, im sure they didn't know that it was a camera.

That strip of gibberish in the bottom is there because I have to manually position the film for each shot by using a small circular window where numbers pop out.. NOT Accurate :D ..but with time I shall master it!

Had another great assignment with 944! For the Women in Power issue of September they had me profile Director of Fashion Design and Business Marketing guru, Mary Ann Gale! It was a quick shoot at the Art Institute campus in Costa Mesa- had to improvise quick, and put together a lil backdrop. Thought it went well with her attire, brought the Hensels to play as well. Thanks Tricia for coordinating the shoot!

San Francisco, city of good vibes!

This week was pretty awesome, Pari at Paridym Pictures called us to shoot some furniture for Touchstone's new marketing, and we flew to San Francisco for an exhausting but awesome 12hr shoot. I emphasize awesome so much because the studio there was a bliss to work in, ample space and great accommodations for all our needs. Here is a little sample of what we came up with:

So that was the studio, but I gotta show you all some pics we took in SF, that city is so cool to walk in and just explore, me and Lou kind of rediscovered our cameras haha. Oh and the flight there was just as exciting...

I gotta give props to Richard Branson for creating an amazing airline, Virgin America.. I have yet to experience Virgin Atlantic, but I have to say the domestic counterpart is plain bad-ass.

And I wouldn't be surprised if it is not that profitable, since it was the most economic choice and it was by far the most modern plane I have been in. Boarding on it was like walking into party limo, and they let me reserve my seats before hand, and even offered to upgrade to first class for just $50. But there was really no need for that since all the seats come with their own entertainment system, including TV shows, music and DOOM! yep, the oldschool game.

But anyway, enough advertising for Virgin although they really do deserve it! I read that profits for the next 10 years are going to a fund to help fight global warming.

Back to the city...we had really good food with really good company. If you are ever hungry around china town, I recommend eating at the House of Nanking.

We also ordered some weird tea full of flowers, I didn't think it was better than plain green tea, but was interesting to drink.

I guess this kid saw I was taking photos and he made the funniest face...

We also frequented a couple of bars down by Castro and then this Irish pub by the Marina area.

Lou's new Nikon D300 performed like a mean beast, look at the sharpness on these photos. They were taken with the tiny 50mm f/1.4 which was a great all around lens for the city, and later when the sun went down, it got some awesome quality shots in low light.

I seriously got a lot of cool vibes from being in SF.. the city has a lot of peculiar things that make it unforgettable. The weather was kind of chilly, but the people very warm. And the city has those crazy hills, its surrounded by water and iconic bridges, and a little piece of China in the middle of it. Was very relaxing to experience it during the week, people just did their thing and we didn't feel like tourists that much, which was cool.

Funny thing is I never heard of this brand before, but through the magic of myspace, we connected and I ended up shooting their first release in Summer 2006.

Now, 2 years later and approx 300 stores worldwide, Orisue has turned into one of those most legit clothing/ streetwear brands in the market today.

Got in contact with a really cool publication in Long Beach called The District Weekly. A fashion, entertainment and news magazine created by some good folks at the OC register. Pretty sweet first assignment for the District- got to shoot a profile of an upcoming band, Avi Buffalo.

A fellow Seattle native, Denise aka Niecey held it down for Boogiezone Breed for some time before moving to LA to pursue dance. Recently acquired by MSA Talent Agency, she is definitely going to make a mark in the industry.

Product lifestyle, a project me and Tigran have always looked to delve into. Thanks to our good friend Linda Domingo at 944 and thatsfresh.com, we had the chance to shoot and mess around with some new products from the Rainbow Sandal Company. We spent the day at Laguna Beach, the epitome of a relaxing afternoon making nice with the so cal sun.

Move Out 04.01.08

25 Crestline, Nagoos pad, Manor Stone. What ever you wanted to call it, it was just a nice place to be. Such a relaxing haven for the 8-5er's, myself included. A hidden gem really...probably the most legit living arrangement I ever had in Irvine. Tikko unfortunately had to move as well. More on that later...

Filipino American Talent Show: Cypress College- 04.06.08

When I was asked to come shoot this show, I had no idea what to expect really. What was to come honestly blew me away. I think I got a glimpse of the future of Asian American talent, no joke. Some of these kids, barely in college, definitely knew how to hold it down! Some of the names include Mike Isberto and AJ Raphael, I'm sure you'll see them or hear bout them in a short time, sick!!

Kappa Zeta Phi Formals- 04.12.08

The lovely girls of Kappa Zeta Phi invited us back for the Installation of their new class once again. Me and Tigran cruised up to the Westin LAX, a place that brought back some fond memories. Here are some behind the scenes!

Four Twenty- 04.20.08

A brisk Sunday afternoon in Irvine on such a day only means you'll get to enjoy some great company and partake in some interesting dialogue. I just happened to end up with our friends from Riot 5 and Pic Member over at Germainder, with Ray Ricafort in the mix as well. Ray is leaving for New Zealand in June, going to be a part of a show on PBS, documenting his travels with other strangers. Wish I could tag along shiet...haha.

On the way out, low and behold I run into Mr. Lawrence Kao of Kaba Modern and Kyle Dineen of Kallusive Clothing, what up nuckas!

Elm Boogie Photoshoot- 04.26.08

I've been wanting to do a session with Elm Pizarro for quite some time. He is the CEO, Founder and Brain child of the internationally recognized dance community website, Boogiezone.com. We were more than excited to work with Elm again, aside from doing smaller projects for him in the past, it was nice to have a day to relax, catch up and shoot some marketing material for him and the organization. Elm has helped create what the dance scene has turned into now with shows such as Americas Best Dance Crew and So You Think You Can Dance. He is a kid at heart, wise in thought.

A busy April indeed, more updates to come!!

Cruising San Diego

This week I was shooting around in San Diego, got some nice shots and made them black and white. See if you like em.

Also, I stopped by a camera store and bought alot of film for a very old camera I have obtained from my relatives. Now I have to wait for the film to develop... ah! no instant gratification like the digital stuff.

While at the camera store, me and a friend messed around with a beauty dish shooting it manually (had to click the camera shutter and the strobe) Turned out pretty cool!
